"A Hidden Heart "
Duo bit back a whimper. The shadows pressed in on him from all sides as he wavered on his feet, then sank to his knees beneath their weight. His arms hung, useless, from his shoulders, yet already they tingled with the return of sensation. Duo forced his fingers to move despite the fiery pain, hoping to speed up the process. For now, any further motion was impossible. Only darkness met Duos frantic gaze. Darkness meant the unknown. His mind envisioned a thousands formless terrors lurking all around him. Duo took a deep breath. He needed to learn the bounds of his new prison, and then maybe it would cease to frighten him. Since Duo could not see in the impenetrable gloom, he closed his eyes and concentrated on his other senses. The air tasted dank and moist upon his tongue. A foul stench emanated from somewhere to his left; hed be careful not to move in that direction. Duo had no intention of standing up, in case there were spiders or some other horrid creatures above him. The faint sound of scurrying Duo recognized. Rats, loathsome, but familiar. So long as they kept their distance, Duo had no objection to sharing his cell with them. He found their company preferable to that of the men whod dragged him here. //Why did they bring me here?// Duo hadnt been surprised when the Dragon had locked him up. Though he posed no threat to anyone, Duo could see the need for caution, especially in the princes castle. If the guards had been willing to allow a stranger to see Milliardo, he wouldnt have ended up on the wallor in the Dragons custody. The sudden chill in Duos heart rivaled the cold air surrounding him. //The Dragon has to be responsible for my new accommodations.// Duo thought the Dragon understood his dilemma, the need that had driven him to the Sank Castle. //How could he do this to me? And why?// Duo huddled in a ball on the floor, his arms wrapped tight about his knees for warmth and comfort. The Dragons betrayal cut deep. Although Duo had confided in him, trusted the Dragon with his story, he owed Duo nothing. And the pull of attraction Duo felt in his presence simply meant he was ignorant of men, and a fool. Shame and anger filled Duo. Self-pity solved nothing. His journey so far hadnt been easy, but Duo knew his situation could be worse. Battered and bruised, cold and hungryhed been all those things before. But Duo was still whole and healthy, with a spirit to match. He would survive. And triumph. A lifetime spent within the imprisoning walls of Saint Winifreds had taught Duo the value of patience. Hed use that patience again. What else could he do but familiarize himself with his surroundings and make plans? In time he would discover what the Dragon wanted from him, why hed sent him here. And Lord Chang Wufei would learn that Duos spirit would not break so easily.
